Skunk Cabbage
Small signs of emerging life are visible even amidst the frozen ground. Thanks to its ability to produce heat, Skunk Cabbage, can be found in early March- mid April. With its unique chemistry it can generate enough energy, when flowering, to actually melt snow around it!
This sci- fi looking perennial grows in wet, swampy areas. The distinct auburn hood protects the flowers inside.
Peak in the opening where small flowers on a spike called the Spadix our located. These are the source of the heat and its unique smell.
As its name hints, the Eastern Skunk Cabbage gets its name from the odor it produces when its leaves are disturbed, this smelly scent attracts flies and beetles needed for pollination.
I am continually fascinated by hidden messages woven throughout nature by our Creator. We almost forgoed our planned hike because it was a cold, overcast day in March. So thankful we did. Skunk cabbage, is a reminder, that even in the bleakest times you can be the source that can change the environment around you. Just another reason to get outside and keep discovering anew.
