Ocqueoc Falls. If you’re struggling to say the name, here is a little help. Pronounced “Ah-KEY-ock” Falls.

Located off the US-23 heritage route, there are 6 miles of trails in the Ocqueoc Fall Bicentennial Pathway.

One thing I love about the main part of this trail is that it’s handicap accessible. Ocqueoc Falls is technically the largest waterfall in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Small compared to Upper Peninsula falls, it’s still a great place to explore. The path is paved and even has a boardwalk bridge that leads along the river trail. From the parking lot, a short little walk on the paved path is .03 miles, out and back, to view the falls.

A grassy open area with picnic tables and rock ledge formations creates a pleasant spot to sit, enjoy lunch and view the falls.

Near the falls, rocks have been piled up by swimmers in the river creating unique water runs. In warmer months you can take a swim in nature’s natural waterpark.

We’ve always been the family that ventures past the typical trail edge. The trail leading off to the right along the river was wet in spots and the terrain is rugged with cedar roots and rocks, but it was one of our favorite spots to play away from the busier falls.

Additionally, take time to explore the Ocqueoc Falls Bicentennial Pathway in the Mackinaw State Forest. The trail system contains four loops with various distances from 6 miles to shorter 3 mile loops, to fit all skill levels.

On the opposite end of the main trail along the river, the dirt path followed the river until it ends at an overpass bridge. My country kids, of course, were quite enthralled with the graffiti under the bridge and had to pose for some pictures. You never know what new things you will find to pique your interest!
