Nature Mandalas: Outdoor Activity for Kids
Nature Mandalas
What is a Mandala?
Mandala simply means "circle" in Sanskrit. These circular geometric designs represent the universe and often are an aid in meditation. A nature mandala is basically a type of design, figure, or pattern using materials in nature.
One of the best parts of this activity is that it will inspire you to get outside in the fresh air and enjoy the beauty in nature. This is an activity that can done by any age, both children and adults will enjoy being creative. Plus, you can create mandalas in any season.
Instructions for Making Mandalas:
First start by going on a walk through the woods, local park, or the beach. It is helpful to bring a bag or bucket to hold the items you collect, especially so your pockets aren’t overflowing. Make sure to collect a large amount of each unique material, it helps to have similar sizes and shapes for a more uniform look.
Some examples of materials include fall leaves, rocks, berries, flower petals, acorns, ornamental grasses, pine needles, and seashells. We have made them during each seasons, which adds variety and dictates what materials are readily available.
Clear a protected, smooth space devoid of debris such as a sandy beach, low cut grass, or wooden picnic table. Avoid a windy day if you are using lighter weight items such as leaves or flower petals.
Sort your items into piles of similar materials.
Start with your center items and work your way outward as you begin to make your pattern. Be creative!

Personally, we have found mandalas are quite relaxing to make and lovely to look at. My children don’t always make them circular or they start creating their own unique designs of stars, diamonds, and rainbows. Let your imaginations run wild and simply enjoy being outside together.
