Are you searching for hiking outfits for your outdoor adventures that are both cute and functional? Clothing that you actually want to wear and, dare I say, don’t want to take off. Clothes that will prepare you to conquer any terrain whether you’re camping, trail running, hiking, backpacking or just carrying your squirming toddler across the parking lot.

I’ve rounded up my tried and true favorites from years of adventuring. Covering the best leggings (that won’t slip down), supportive comfy hiking boots, functional hats, best trail running shoes and base layers to keep you warm in cold weather and cool in hot temps.

There is no bad weather, only bad clothing
— Swedish Saying

I am in complete agreement with this popular Swedish saying, “There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.”

Having the right clothing for various weather conditions is essential to be comfortable in the outdoors during any camping trip or day hike.

Thankfully by investing in a few basic staples, you can have a functional hiking wardrobe for your next adventure. As a busy mom of four, I personally love that with a few key pieces, packing is easy since I have the essential clothing needed for each trip. I’ve included helpful links for your convenience so you can stop researching items and starting adventuring.

I only recommend products I would use myself and all opinions expressed here are my own. This post may contain affiliate links that add no additional cost to you, I may earn a small commission. Some products from Free Fly were gifted for an honest review.

FOOTWEAR

Footwear is key. Nothing can ruin a trip faster than a blister or cold, wet feet. The two key components are socks and hiking shoes or boots

Darn Tough Socks

Hiking Socks

When selecting socks, make sure to choose wool, or wool blends. I remember hearing the hype about Darn Tough socks, but didn’t want to pay the hefty price tag. Then I finally succumbed and ordered a pair during a particularly cold, winter day in Michigan and ever since, I’ve been hooked. There is no denying it, they are worth every penny. They keep your toes toasty warm and have the best support for your arch and heels, plus they are guaranteed for life. Micro Crew Midweight is my favorite height for hiking. My second choice for wool socks is Smart Wool Socks. I’ve used this tried and true brand for years for skiing and hiking.

Hiking Boots

Living in Michigan, it’s crucial to have warm winter gear, especially for your feet. Waterproof boots are a must for resisting the wet, cold snow. When I found these bad boys on sale, Merrell 4 Siren Mid Hiking Boots, I couldn’t resist. Merrell is a staple for hiking shoes. All my children have worn Merrell hiking shoes and we trust this brand for quality items that last.

Hiking Sandals were crucial while hiking at Turkey Run State Park

Hiking Sandals

When deciding on a quality hiking sandal, look for ones that are fully secured to the foot and has a sturdy sole to navigate uneven terrain. Waterproof materials are also advisable. I prefer sandals with a supportive arch and sole like Cloud Chacos Sandal, which I’ve worn for years. Merrell hiking sandals and Teva are two of our favorites.

Trail Running Shoes

As an avid runner you’ll find me most days in lightweight running shoes. If you’re like me and prefer a lightweight shoe, I highly recommend Brooks running shoes, which have gotten me through hundreds of miles, including marathons.

If you prefer a trail running shoe, I’m currently loving TERREX Speed Ultra Trail Running Shoes by adidas. I’m obsessed with the bright colors, the incredible traction they provide and the lightweight feel. Whether it’s a day hike or a local run, these shoes will go the distance.

Waterproof Gore Tex Trail Shoe

During my 12 hour Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, I chose a Gore-tex trail running shoe Salomon, which helped support my feet for the rugged conditions. The Waterproof, breathable components of GORE-TEX sealed out water and mud, yet let my feet breathe so I could focus on the challenge ahead. I appreciated their waterproof features, but do admit they are quite heavier than trail running shoes, which I am accustomed too. On the same trip my running friends both wore Saucony Women's Peregrine 12 Trail Running Shoe , which provided traction, grip and a rock plate that shed moisture for the 23 mile hike.

CLOTHING

Leggings with Pockets

One of my go-to wardrobe staples is leggings. The number one feature I look for in leggings is pockets. I prefer to have easy accessibility to my keys, phone or credit cards. The other feature I appreciate are a high waist and leggings that stay up. These Amazon IUGA High Waisted Leggings with Pockets are the best I’ve found for the price, especially if you’re on a tight budget. They have all the features, plus are buttery soft and thick, so no underwear lines. If you love them like I do, they also come in shorts, too.

Hiking Pants/ Shorts

Hike in Guide Pro Pants by Eddie Bauer

Now mamas, I’d recommend to go ahead and invest in some quality clothing for harsh conditions. One of my favorite hiking pants are the guide pro pant by Eddie Bauer and guide pro shorts. With a slimming midrise cut, they have just enough stretch and give for ease of movement. The fabric is durable and is designed to shed moisture. Mine are going strong for over 5+ years without any wear. Features that I appreciate are the zippered pockets on both legs, which aren’t bulky and can fit the essentials. I even bought my husband the men’s version.

My other favorite pant to hike in are Ziya unwind joggers, I have them in 3 colors and love the fit and thickness. Also I enjoy them for lounging around the campsite or at home.

Additionally, I adore my Free Fly Women’s Breeze Short, they fit true to size. For reference, I wear a size small and am 5’4, 125 lbs. They feature moisture wicking material that dries quickly and has sun protection. A stretchy, elastic waist and decent size pockets are a huge plus.

Hats

Hot Weather Protection

Before long hikes make sure to try out all your clothing, footwear and gear. Wearing superlite visor.

A breathable hat or visor are also ideal for hot weather. One of my favorite bucket list hikes was completing the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. During this extreme hike, I was able to put my clothing and gear to the ultimate test. I wore a superlite visor the entire time and greatly appreciated the shade, but breathability of it. It weathered 12 straight hours of relentless intense heat. Another great option if you are hiking in the heat, especially unprotected desert areas, a hat with with detachable neck protection can be a lifesaver.

If you’re hiking in extreme sunny weather, sun protection is important to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Stay out longer by choosing a bamboo sun shirt with UPF 50+ rating, which will help keep you cool and comfortable. The lightweight materials of Free Fly bamboo shade hoodies and shirts are worth the investment. The soft and stretchy fabric is odor resistant, plus I personally love that it drapes and doesn’t cling to my stomach.

I utilize it for being on the water while kayaking, during hikes, but also frequently at the beach when the sun’s rays are intense. My daughter has the matching one, so we don’t have to constantly be reapply sunscreen.

Cooler Weather Beanie

Living on a working farm in Michigan, I appreciate thick wool blend hats and I reach for my Carhartt beanie time and time again. They are warm and well-made. They are comfortable for longer wear and are not itchy.

Layers are key when hiking

Crisp Autumn hikes are my all time favorite, which means I need a warm hat to keep me comfortable. Safety is crucial, when hiking in the fall during hunting season. Bright colors, especially for the fall is idea so you’re not mistaken for a deer.

Base Layers

Base layer are crucial component, but are often overlooked. These base layers are the clothing that is in direct contact with your skin and is important for this very reason. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and plays a big factor in regulating your temperature. Ideally you want something that will wick moisture away from the body (avoid cotton). Wool is a great option because of it’s anti-microbial and antibacterial properties, plus the ability to wick moisture away. The key is definitely to choose breathable shirts that you can layer like the Icebreaker’s Merino Wool long sleeve shirt.

Undergarments

When hiking comfort on the trail and while camping is important. Sports bras should be supportive, not restrictive. The material that wicks sweat and dries quickly to keep cool on a hike. Make sure that the straps aren’t loose or rub on your pack.

HIKING GEAR

Backpack

For simple day hikes, a decently priced pack for day hikes is the TETON sports, which is lightweight, durable and includes a water hydration pack & rain cover and lots of pockets. My one complaint is that the straps where a bit stiff at first.

One step up in price point, quality and comfort is the Osprey Skimmer Daypack. This roomy backpack has a reinforced back which is padded and ventilated for comfort. It has quick stow compartments that and can hold those jackets or water bottles your kids hand off to you. The pack has a ton of nifty and thoughtful additional features too.

Okay now that we’ve got all our clothing essentials, you may be wondering what backpack to carry it all in. Osprey Day Lite Backpack is a solid brand and the Osprey Lite Kids Backpack for a child that wants to carry their own supplies.

Water Bottle

Always bring water even if it’s only for a short distance. Our favorite lightweight water bottles are Contingo. Although on hot days, we bring stainless steal Owala’s with ice.

Tips for Choosing Clothing

  1. Ideally avoid cotton and jean materials, which hold onto moisture and leaves you chilled in colder weather and sweaty in hot temperatures. Choose athletic clothing made of polyester, nylon or wool.

  2. Think breathable layers so that you can take off or add clothing if needed.

  3. Test clothing before your trip or hike. We’ve all been guilty of this. Excited about wearing brand new pair of shoes or clothing item, then realize it doesn’t quite fit the way you hope. Wearing that brand new pair of boots that ends up giving you blisters a mile into a hike, socks that slip down or a bra that itches is one quick way to ruin a hike.

  4. Quality clothing can be pricey, I get it. I try to think of it as an investment, since many of my items I’ve had for years.

  5. A couple tips for finding deals on hiking clothing. Shop off season, for example look for winter gear when it’s being clearanced out. Also some stores like TJ Maxx can have name brand clothing.

  6. Bring an extra stash of clothes in the car because inevitably someone will get muddy or chilled.

Prepare your Clothes for Ticks and Mosquitoes

One of the biggest annoyances in the outdoors is ticks and mosquitoes. The trick is to stop ticks before they become attached. Pre-treat clothing and gear with products with Permethrin like in Swayer Insect repellent. If you’re searching for a mosquitoes spray without DEET, try Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Natural Spray. Although the smell is strong it is worth it to avoid mosquito bites. Carrying a tick remover in your backpack and vehicle can be beneficial too. After hiking, start the practice of daily tick checks for a safe, preventative routine. Here is helpful information about the 5 most common ticks.
