Strawberry Activities in June for Kids
Strawberry Picking
The beginning of June is synonymous with strawberry picking. Start summer off right with your children by heading to your local u-pick farm to pick some delicious red strawberries. Early to mid-June kicks off the strawberry picking season in our state of Michigan. If you’re from Michigan here is a helpful guide for finding a nearby local farm, check out this Full Guide to Strawberry Picking in Michigan.
This time of year always brings to mind our favorite children’s book, The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear. This delightful book is cleverly written and illustrated by Don and Audrey Wood.
I never tire of reading it over and over again. Our family has the entire book memorized. I highly recommend adding this sweet story to your picture book collection. You can purchase it here on Amazon.
After spending a delightful morning going strawberry picking, we decided to make a whole day of enjoying strawberry inspired books, crafts, snacks and activities.
Strawberry Craft:
One of the best parts of the book shows the little mouse trying to disguise the strawberry from the big hungry bear with a mustache and glasses. My kids think it’s hilarious!
When I posed the question, “How would you disguise the strawberry to hide it from the bear?,” it sparked a fun and unique discussion and prompted a strawberry inspired craft. We decided to create our own disguises for strawberries. The options are endless including: superheroes, gumball machines, monsters, firetrucks and pirates. My children were so creative during this activity. I love to see their imaginations soar!
I honestly did not purchase any materials to complete this project. Our family keeps a well stocked bin full of miscellaneous materials that we utilized for this craft project.
Optional Materials: Some things we used included stickers, construction paper, tissue paper, puff balls, and googly eyes.
Utilizing scissors, glue, crayons or color pencils are helpful too.
When we first began the craft activity, I quickly sketched a simple strawberry. My children requested additional copies of the strawberry because they wanted to make more disguises. I created a printable copy to make life simpler. If you need a simple strawberry drawing you can download this one.
Strawberry Mouse Snacks:
Want a cute, easy and healthy strawberry mouse snack to go along with your craft? These strawberry mice are so simple to make! Simply cut the strawberries in half and add slightly melted chocolate chips for the eyes. Next dip the tip of the strawberry in melted chocolate for the nose. We used a slice of cheese cut thinly for the tail.
Hope you can carve out some time this season to go strawberry picking and make these simple craft activities this year. Happy June!!
