Only a 2 hour drive from Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus, you can escape from the city and vacation in the Shawnee State Forest. We’ve included recommendations for activities, kid-friendly restaurants, the best lakes, beaches and outdoor adventures near Shawnee State Park. Many of these summer activities are even free! With a large family, I’m always on the lookout for inexpensive family trips and this fits the bill. Here is your family-friendly guide to the best things to do in Scioto County with kids.

Our family decided to make the most of the Memorial Weekend to try out the many activities available at Shawnee State Forest. Popular outdoor recreational activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding and fishing. With over 60,000 acres of forested land, numerous waterways and rolling hills we couldn't wait to explore the area.

One of the main draws of the area is that it’s entirely free to visit the Shawnee Forest and Shawnee State Park, which means dozens of free activities to enjoy. We guarantee you’ll love exploring the natural beauty of the area and partaking in the programming and events occurring at the Ohio State Park for the whole family. Check the monthly schedule, from archery and nature crafts to themed hikes, there’s something for everyone.

Stop by the Scioto Welcome Center for a Visitors Guide and Maps

Thankfully an easy way to plan your summer is to start off by visiting the Scioto Visitors Center located in downtown Portsmouth. With loads of informative brochures, it makes it simple to find the best spots to visit in the area. So let us help you plan your kids Ohio bucket list this summer in Southern Ohio. To get you started though, we’ve rounded up our top 20 things to do this summer with kids in Scioto County.

1. Have a Blast at a Pump Park

Try something different, as you experience one of the newest family attractions in Scioto, Ohio. The Red Bull Pump Track, claims the title of the largest Pump Track in the entire state of Ohio! If you’re unfamiliar with a pump park, it’s a continuous loop of hills, raised banks, mounds and turns. Instead of peddling, riders use a pumping motion to maintain speed by utilizing their upper and lower body as they travel around the track and over obstacles. It’s fun for everyone and quite the workout!

Besides the pump track, the Earl Thomas Conley County Riverside Park has scenic trails picnic tables, basketball courts, playground, swings and a splash park within the park, making it an ideal location for a family outing in southern Ohio. Want more opportunities for biking, Ohio River Campground also has a new pump track.

2. Get Sunkissed at the Beach

Scioto County is blessed to have ample waterways. Nestled within Shawnee State Park there are two options for lakes with sandy public beach access for swimming, fishing, kayaking or canoeing.

Sunny days are the ideal time to head to Turkey Creek Lake, the larger of the lakes located within the state park. Gain access to the beach by crossing over a bridge that leads to the sandy swimming area. If you visit Turkey Creek Lake, kids will spend countless hours playing at the designated swimming area. Directly adjacent from the campground, you can easily walk over to putt putt golf, grab a snack from the camp store or rent kayaks. Other noted features are restrooms as well as disc golf. If you want to hike, scenic trails wrap around the lake and offer soothing views and amble hiking opportunities.

Roosevelt Lake, the smaller of the two lakes, is a popular choice for groups because of the large beach area, modern waterfront playground, grills and covered pavilion. Roosevelt features a volleyball net for those who want to be active, as well as pavilions to rent. Restrooms are also located on site for your convenience. Facilities include disc golf, a sandy beach and a spacious parking lot to accommodate large groups. .

3. Climb on a Play Ground

Swing, slide and play at one of the many playgrounds in the area. This summer pack a picnic lunch and visit a playground with the kids. Scioto County has loads of parks that can help get your kids energy out. We’re highlighting a few of our favorites. Desiring soothing lake views as your children play, head to Roosevelt Lake and access their modern playground. Another great option is head to the Shawnee State Park to access the modern playgrounds across from the Shawnee Lodge on the large grassy area that is ideal for a summer day.

Easily spend a whole day checking out one of the newest playgrounds in the area at the Ohio River Campground. While visiting try out the dog park, pump track and splashpad. If you love splashpads, Earl Thomas Conley County Riverside Park is not to be missed. The sprawling park features a modern playground, covered pavilions, and if you're feeling daring enough, try out one of the newest features, the pump track.

4. Paddle Down a River or Lake

Southern Ohio is known for its many rivers, waterways and lakes, including both the Scioto River and Ohio River, which forms the state's southern boundary. Even if you don’t own your own kayak or canoe, there are multiple places to rent recreational boats and watercrafts. Venture to Shawnee State Park, which has two boat launch access points, as well as boat rentals for kayaks and canoes. Another option is take a guided trip kayaking on the Scioto River. No matter what you choose, you’re bound to have an easy, breezy day on the open water.

5. Catch a Fish

Cast your reel and you might get lucky while fishing. The area of Scioto has tons of gorgeous lakes tucked into the wooded hills you can explore. The soothing atmosphere while fishing is a great idea to disconnect while you reconnect with your family in nature. Bluegill, trout, catfish, bass and crappie, can all can be found in the waters at Shawnee State Park. In early spring, Turkey Creek Lake is stocked with trout for the Shawnee State Park Trout Derby. This fun tournament is held in April and is an exciting event for visitors to enjoy. If you want to fish from the waters, you can rent watercrafts boats at Roosevelt Lake. Remember to secure an Ohio fishing license, which is required for those 16 and up.

6. Fulfill Your Sweet Tooth for Ice cream at Buckeyes Dairy Bar

Choose from a wide variety of ice cream flavors as you sit outside under the shaded picnic tables at Buckeyes Dairy Bar. Try a new flavor like Banana Cream Pie, Lemon Chill, Kahlua Almond Amaretto, or a dairy free / lactose option like Blueberry Pancake. An affordable and leisurely lunch is an easy choice this summer since Buckeyes Dairy Bar serves up classic American food of footlong hotdogs, burgers, onion rings, fries, and pizza, which will satisfy even the pickiest kid’s appetites. Add in a game of miniature golf with the picturesque landscape as the backdrop to your activities.

With budget-friendly prices, friendly customer service and a scenic landscape, you’re guaranteed to have an enjoyable time. The 18 hole mini golf course is open seasonal from April through October. Prices are $6.00 for 18 holes of golf.

7. Gain a Bird’s Eye View of the Ohio River Valley

Outdoor enthusiasts will love beginning their day with an invigorating 2.5 mile hike to the top of Raven Rock State Nature Preserve, which features natural sandstone cliffs and stunning views that stretch for miles. This shady hike is a great option for families with a rewarding view at the top and lots of interesting features from boulders to creek crossing that will keep children entertained. In all, the hike took our family of six, 1.5 hours to complete.

It is free to visit the preserve, but a permit is required for entry and needs to be obtained 14 days prior. Afterwards head across the street, where you can continue your fun-filled day at the Earl Thomas Conley Riverside Park, which has a splashpad kids will love.

8. Cool Off at the Splash Pad

Splash and play at the Doug Coleman Memorial Splashpad. Modeled with flowers, frogs and a giant red dumping bucket, this unique splash pad will entertain your children for hours in the summer heat. Make sure to bring cash, for only $2.00 per person it’s a budget-friendly option for families. Located just inside the Earl Thomas Conley Riverside Park its easy to make an entire day outside with your family. Additionally, the park has picnic tables, basketball and tennis courts, scenic trails, a pump track and playgrounds that can be utilized. Want to explore more, an additional splashpad is located at the Ohio River Campground in Stout, Ohio.

9. Escape while Hiking the Trails at Shawnee Forest

Escape to the quiet of the Shawnee State Forest. With miles and miles of backpacking and hiking trails, you can easily recharge in nature. Spanning over 63,000 acres of land, you can enjoy viewing wildlife, as well as hiking through rolling hills and lush forests.

One of the most notable sites is the Copperhead Fire Tower. Although fire towers are no longer used today, replaced by aircraft surveillance, they continue to stand today as a monument that exemplifies the history and efforts of the forest rangers. Spend a few hours in the Shawnee State Forest and you'll soon fall in love with the beauty of "The Little Smokies of Ohio".

10. Try a New Sport at Black Bear Disc Golf

An advanced course, Black Bear Disc Golf spreads across much of Shawnee State Park. The majority of the course is hilly and forested, with a couple of open holes. It includes 2.8 miles of hiking across a wide variety of terrains. If you’re not up for the whole course, enjoy playing on a few of the many holes. Some easy ones to reach our the baskets near the playground at the Lodge. Ample parking is available and easy to find. Fuel up on the 12 & 13 holes, use the restroom at the Lodge and then enjoy some food and a drink to quench your thirst. Dogs are allowed on the course, so bring your furry friends along for fun.

11. Take an Artistic Journey Through History at the Portsmouth Floodwall Murals

Learn about the history of Portsmouth through beautiful curated murals adorning the buildings and floodwall in the downtown area in Portsmouth. The Portsmouth Ohio Floodwall is a stunning visual history lesson of the area from the days of the Shawnee tribes through the industrial era until modern day. This Ohio masterpiece, featuring the talented art of Robert Dafford and other contributors, is worth the time to leisurely stroll through the streets or drive along the Floodwall.

Make sure to pick up pamphlets at the Portsmouth Scioto County Visitors Center which gives a detailed description of each mural and a brief history, plus gather ideas and information to help plan your summer adventures. The drive will end near Alexandria Point Park, a charming location with views of the bridge at the junction of the Ohio River and Scioto River. While visiting grab a bite to eat or do some shopping because Downtown Portsmouth is filled with unique stores and a variety of restaurants and cafes.

12. Have a Picnic at Alexandria Point Park

Enjoy picturesque views of the bridge and a picnic lunch at Alexandria Point Park. This unique spot offers sweeping views of the bridge at the junction of the Ohio River and Scioto River. Although it’s a tiny park, it’s situated in a great location near the end of the Portsmouth Floodwall. Besides the gorgeous view, paved walkways with benches add to its tranquil setting. A popular spot for photos or a relaxing lunch among the blooming hydrangeas, butterfly weed and daylilies.

13. Sharpen Your Skills at the Shawnee State Archery Range

Looking to try your luck at a new sport or maybe sharpen up your shooting skills. Shawnee State Park has an archery range featuring eight targets. Bring your own equipment and practice your aim on the static targets set at varying distances.

If you don’t have your own bow and arrows, the Nature Center offers special program days where they teach you the basic skills and provide all the archery equipment needed. Shawnee State Park Archery Range is located on US- 125 within the State Park and can easily be spotted from the road.

14. Take a Dip in the Pool

Splash all day long! Boasting not one but two spacious pools, the Shawnee State Lodge and Conference Center is the perfect spot to splish splash and play this year with your family. The heated indoor pool is a perfect retreat during cooler days, especially when you get to relax in the hot tub while the kids splash away.

Once the weather heats up, bask in the sun and relax outside in the lounge chairs at the outdoor pool. The huge outdoor area also has a kiddie pool that little ones will love.

The view alone from the upper deck of the Shawnee State Lodge is worth a visit, you’ll see right away why they call this area the Little Smokies of Ohio. Luckily, lodge and cabin guests have access to the pool for free during their stay. Another option is to visit the lodge for the day and purchase a day pass for $10/ per person. Besides the pool, utilize all the amenities including the arcade room, firepits and onsite restaurants.

15. Go Horseback Riding

Boasting some of the best bridal trails in Southern Ohio the Shawnee Forest area has tons of options for adventures. If you don’t have your own horse a local family owned stable, Ben’s Happy Stables, offers trail rides from 1-2 hours in length. Providing guided tours through the wooded trails at $35 per person, your family will enjoy an exciting outdoor adventure.

As the horses are being saddled, visit with Ben, the owner of the stables, as he shares local history of the area. During your visit, riders will be assisted by trained guides that instruct visitors on how to mount, steer and ride their horse. Children as young as 3 years of age can ride along with a parent.

We enjoyed our ride, especially seeing wildlife on the trails including white tailed deer, squirrels and various twittering birds. If you love animals head over to see the farm animals including peacocks and turkeys at the stable after your ride. Some of the trails were being logged during our visit and under reconstruction.

16. Feel the Thrill on a Mountain Bike Trail

Take advantage of the recently completed mountain biking trail system, which was is a welcome addition to the state park. The trails are single tracks and include switchbacks, berms, inclines, jump options and man-made bridges. The trails range from easy to intermediate and are a beautiful ride for those looking for a thrilling workout.

Easily find parking at the lodge and then head towards the playground/cabins to locate the trailheads. Follow the paved path, then bike up the hill where you will spot a swing and a sign.

17. Hold a Critter at the Nature Center

Stop at the A-framed Shawnee State Park Nature Center, which is located inside the park by the dam.

Learn and play at the nature playground, mix in the mud kitchen, climb through the tunnel or take a tour of the historical cabin. During your visit, check out the critters and reptiles as you visit. On occasions you can touch and hold the green snake, amphibians and reptiles with the help of volunteers and Ohio State naturalist. The trailhead is conveniently located at the edge of the nature center. Pick up maps and if you have the time and relax in the roomy swing park as you plan your adventures for your stay at Shawnee State Forest. Check out the many programs offered at the state park from critter connections, themed hikes and nature crafts.

18. See Dirt Fly at Portsmouth Raceway Park

Kids and adults alike will love the adrenaline surge as they watch racecars speed around the dirt track. Sit outside in the evenings and enjoy this local racetrack while you cheer on your favorite car. Be prepared for vibrating noise from reeving engines, ear plugs and protective eyewear are recommend because when we say you’ll see dirt fly, we literally mean dirt will fly. If you don’t mind getting dusty, then head to the race track this summer with your family. The park only takes cash for concessions and for entry at the gate.

19. Eat Outdoors

Market Street Cafe A cheery yellow canopy and sign beckons visitors to stop in and try Market Street Cafe's fresh deli sandwiches and signature drinks. Along the riverfront area in Portsmouth, Ohio is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat.

Popular menu items include fresh salads, warm paninis, savory soups, and wraps. Make sure to satisfy your sweet tooth with some sugar cookies, which are a local favorite! After choosing several recommended items, we were highly impressed with the unique blend of flavors in the Turkey Crunch Wrap, the warm Chicken Mushroom Melt and the Boneyfiddle Club Melt. With both indoor and outdoor seating there are tons of options, which is ideal when the weather is a perfect sunny 78 degrees.

All sandwiches are served with your choice of bread, kettle chips and pickle spears. When the cafe ran out of pickles, we appreciated their excellent customer service as they provided a complimentary cookie instead. Our kids were quite satisfied with this arrangement.

20. Camp under the Stars

If you want to camp overnight under the stars, Shawnee State Park offers two great options nearby: Turkey Creek Campgrounds and Ohio River Campground. Centered in Shawnee State Park, camping at Turkey Creek State Park is a great option for families who want a relaxing time being surrounded by nature. With the heavily forested Turkey Creek Campground has both electric and non-electric sites available, suitable for tents or trailers. Hiking trails, playground, putt-putt golf, and a sand volleyball court are located within the campground. Dogs are allowed in the campground and beach area on a 6ft leash. Ohio River Campground, is the most recently completed state park project. Offering full hookup, Ohio River has 80 sites available for those looking for electric and water. Pet owners will enjoy two onsite dog parks, while kids will love the splash pad, playground and bike pump track. Even if you don’t camp, visitors can still use the splashpad, dog park and playground during the day. All Ohio State Parks are free, which make this is a an affordable day trip or vacation for families.

Continue your adventures by staying overnight at Shawnee Lodge and Conference Center in a room or a rustic cabin. Our family of six elected to stay in a cabin while enjoying a more natural setting with privacy. Families will love the fully furnished cabins, where they can spread out, cook their own meals and have bonfires. When staying in the cabins you have full access to all the amenities at the Lodge. The spacious family cabins include two bedrooms, a bathroom, living room with TV, and a stocked kitchen; so it’s ideal for large families. We loved finishing the day with an ooey gooey smore as we created lasting family memories circled up around a crackling campfire.

Centered in Shawnee State Forest, take advantage of the rustic lodge, which offers a wealth of amenities. Stunning views, friendly service, and a variety of accommodations can appeal to everyone. Featuring both an expansive indoor and outdoor pool, plus a hot tub, game room and fitness center, there's plenty to keep you busy. In addition, enjoy the convenience of two onsite restaurants. You can’t go wrong staying here.

Reservations for campgrounds can be made 6 months in advance for Ohio state parks. Reservations for day-use facilities, cabins and lodge rooms can be made up to one year in advance.
