There’s a popular saying, "Lake life is the best life" and my family happily agrees. From fishing on the lake to thrilling off-road adventures there is no shortage of outdoor activities for families to enjoy when vacationing in Houghton Lake.
If you’re planning a northern Michigan getaway to visit Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake, Saint Helen or Roscommon with your family this year, here is a family-friendly guide to the best things to do in Houghton Lake area with kids. We’ve included recommendations for activities, restaurants, beaches, accommodations and outdoor adventures at North and South Higgins Lake State Park.

1. Visit South Higgins Lake State Park
Tucked in on the southern side of Higgins Lake, the state park contains one mile of shoreline on Higgins Lake, and is situated by Marl Lake and the Cut River. Ample opportunities for water sports and hiking are available including 5.5 miles of trails. With multiple docks and boat launches, anglers can enjoy fishing on this spectacular Michigan lake.
The narrow strip of beach is sandy and shallow for a long ways out, which is ideal for children. The beach also has a Moby Mat to allow greater access to individuals, and two Moby Chair can be utilized for those with special needs. A large day use bathhouse has restrooms and changing area. A playground on the side near the restrooms has a large play structure. The beach can get a bit crowded during peak summer hours.

2. Hike Marl Lake Trail
Explore the outdoor beauty of the area while hiking the scenic Marl Lake Trail. Go over a small footpath bridge, then take the trail travels along side the lake rewarding you with beautiful views. Continue hiking, if desired, chose from 3 different routes of varying distances. Marl Lake Trail is a relatively flat, well maintained trail through the woods that is fun to explore. Lost Twin Lakes Another beautiful hike nearby is Lost Twin Lakes, only a short distance away from Houghton Lake.
3. Explore ORV trails by St Helen
Thrilling, edge-of-your-seat family fun is in store when you visit Saint Helen ORV Trail System. In my opinion, there is fun to be had in all 4 seasons. In October to hit the trails to experience autumn color or visit in the winter, and these snow covered trails turn into a winter wonderland. Boasting the largest area of ORV trails in lower Michigan, miles and miles of scenic trails are waiting to be enjoyed.
St Helen's has 50 miles of trails with both two-track and single-track, which include a sand pit, rock scramble and motorsport area. The trails are open to mixed traffic, which includes dirt bikes, quads and 50-inch UTV's. We appreciated that the trails were differentiated by posted signs.
4. Markey Memorial Park and Dog Park
Hands down one of the best parks for kids is at Markey Memorial Park. This playground has everything you could ask for including: three massive play structures, a zipline, gaga ball pit, baseball diamond and even a dog park all set in a wide spacious area in Roscommon. Conveniently located nearby Higgins Lake, your kids will be delighted in climbing up the platform and zipping along the 100 foot zipline. The three modern playground structures will appeal to children of multiple ages. Restrooms, benches and picnic tables make it a great spot to spend the day and pack a picnic. 5. Try out Geocaching
Explore the town and surrounding areas while geocaching. Go on a modern day treasure hunt? Geocaching is a fun adventure that helps gets families outside exploring and enjoying nature. If you love a challenge, then it’sthe perfect time to try finding one of the caches hidden Houghton Lake and Roscommon area. Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau has 30 specifically hidden 30 unique caches as part of the ORB GeoTour. Hidden in locations like trailheads, cemeteries, memorials and parks.
It’s easy, just use your phone and follow GPS coordinates to the cache, where inside you can write your name and take or leave a small item such as a button, sticker, etc.
To participate in the ORB GeoTour:
• Register at geocaching.com
• Use your phone or GPS
• Print your passport
• Sign the physical cache log sheet and record your findings on geocaching.com
• If you find at least 28 of the 30 caches, complete the survey and entry form, then submit your passport
Whether you find one or all of the caches, it's a great way to get outside in nature and make memories with your family this fall, spring or summer.
6. Learn at the CCC Museum
If you're a history buff, make sure to add Higgins Lake Nursery and Civilian Conservation Corp Museum to your itinerary. You can’t beat free admission while you expand your knowledge of the crucial role the CCC had on the area. As you explore the grounds' historical buildings, informative signs, and antiques, you’re sure to learn.
Birthed during the Great Depression by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the CCC began as a means of employing men. Specifically, in 1933 Michigan men worked at the nursery and Higgins Lake CCC Camp and helped plant 484 million trees throughout the state. Due to Roosevelt's initiative and conservation efforts, we are reaping the benefits today as we enjoy the state's parks, forests and trails. 7. Shop for antiques while Supporting Local Buisness at Morning Glory Mercantile
Do you love shopping for eclectic, one-of-a-kind pieces while simultaneously supporting local Michigan buisnesses’, than head to morning glory Mercantile. 8. Eat at Buccilis Pizza
After a long day on the trails, the perfect food to fill your belly is pure Italian goodness found at Buccilli's Pizza. This family-owned restaurant serves up cheesy bread sticks and flavorful pizza that is piled high with fresh mozzarella, homemade sauce, Italian herbs and your favorite pizza toppings. We ordered the award-winning Alvito pizza, which was a hit, and my children especially loved the chicken bacon ranch pizza. Try one of their specialty pizzas and don't skip the cheese bread! Trust me, you'll leave fully satisfied.
9. Go Fishing at Houghton Lake
From early mornings fishing on the lake to stunning sunsets on Houghton Lake, we embraced the best of lake life during our stay, especially my son's favorite hobby- fishing.
Houghton Lake is known as a prime fishing destination. Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Bluegill, Large Mouth Bass and Crappie can all be found in the waters of Houghton Lake. Bring a fishing pole and try your luck on the water. From fishing, kayaking or biking, the views are always better by the lake, especially as the golden sun sinks down on the water.
10. Stock Up on Fishing Items at Lyman’s on the Lake
Before heading out on the water, stop in at Lyman's On the Lake for all your fishing needs. You'll find rows and rows of gear from fishing lures and sinkers to fishing poles and nets. You name it, they've got it! While you're there, grab some live bait, ice, beer, and snacks and you're ready for a day on the water. Lyman's also has rental cabins on the lake and an ice fishing-themed escape room.
11. Grab a Sweet Treat at LJ Loopies
TJ Loopies is your one stop shop for sweet treats. From hand crushed lemonade, decadent cheesecakes, and the newest specialty ice cream - rolled ice cream, there is so much to love. You’ll appreciate that everything is made fresh in house. Sit a spell outside under the shaded tables or take it to go while you enjoy a leisurely day on Houghton Lake.
12. Warm Up with Your Favorite Coffee or Specialty Drink at Kiss Me Coffee Shop
When cooler temps hit, there's no better way to start the morning than with a warm cup filling your hands. Thankfully, we found a locally owned and operated specialty coffee shop, which are our favorite places to support. Kiss Me Coffee Shop checked all the boxes. Delicious, seasonal drinks, fun interior, and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
We firmly believe any adventure is sweeter when you're sipping some flavorful deliciousness. Warm up with a creamy latte infused with the unique flavors of caramel apple, cinnamon pumpkin, or white chocolate.
Kids will love placing a pin on the US map to represent where their home town is located. No matter where you're visiting from, we know you'll be back. We give it the chef's kiss of perfection! Try a seasonal drink like Pumpkin Cake Latte! It's a must this fall for any dessert lover.
13. Camp at North Higgins Lake State Park
North Higgins Lake State Park contains a campground, sandy beach & playground area. It's a popular spot on the northern shores of Higgins Lake during summer days, however, if you visit in the fall you'll enjoy solitude while you take in the changing landscape reflected in the still lake waters.
In late October, we spent a leisurely day playing and listening to the soothing sounds of the waves lapping the shore. A modern playground and swings provide entertainment, plus the fishing docks are ideal for families.
Visit for the day or extend your stay overnight while camping at this lovely Michigan state park featuring mini cabins and modern campsites with electric hookups. Sit a spell on the benches overlooking the water.
14. Attend a Festival

The Higgins Lake/Roscommon Winter Fest is a two-day celebration of winter in tandem with Michigan DNR’s Free Fishing weekend. Other events include a pancake breakfast, cardboard sled race, broomball, and a chili cook off.
15. Rent a Boat
One of the best ways to enjoy the area is right on the water. Rent a boat at HLM Boat Rentals this summer. Spend the day on the water by renting a pontoon boat. With knowledgeable and helpful staff, they make it easy to enjoy a relaxing and fun day on Houghton Lake.

Make staying for the night it’s own adventure in Houghton Lake. Many cabin and cottage rentals can be found along the lake which affords you the opportunity to hike, bike, kayak or fish in the area. Want to be even more immersed in nature stay at one of the many State Parks in the area.
Lakeside Resort & Conference Center
Located on the water the Lakeside Resort and Conference Center has all the modern amenities with an indoor pool, hot tub and water slide, plus an on site restaurant and a free breakfast -its the perfect family-friendly hotel to stay in the area.
VRBO Rental We stayed in a cozy little cottage and could easily bike to the lake. This VRBO rental called The Mallard, had a fun little spot called the “quack shack” for the kids, plus bikes to ride and kayaks to use on the lake.

Best Pizza- Buccilis A Local favorite, this family owned pizza place is sure to please everyone.
Best Breakfast- Shakers Featuring the best breakfast in the area, Shakers serves up classic country fried steak and eggs that Northerner’s love. With a welcoming atmosphere, we love Barb’s motto, “There are no strangers here, only friends we haven’t met. “
Best Burger: Backdoor Saloon Rich with history the Backdoor Saloon offers beautiful views of Houghton Lake and some of the best food. Voted Northern Michigan’s best burger, make sure to try the Big Bad Wolf Burger!
All in One Entertainment: Fred’s Totally worth the drive, this restaurant, bar and bowling center has the best drinks, bowling and food. Try the sirloin steak stroganoff or liver and onions.
The Frog Tiki Bar Eclectic, lively bar with local bands.
R& J Best Choice Market: Taking advice from the locals, we stopped in at the best store in town for essentials after a fun-filled day on the lake. We rewarded ourselves by picking up the best steaks, specialty brats, and burgers in the area at R & J Best Choice Market.

Gather information at the Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau for your trip itinerary. Swing by and pick up maps of the area ORV trails, state park pamphlets, and fishing & hiking guides, local events and festivals.

Lyman’s on the Lake is your one stop shop for all fishing and lake essentials for a day on lake. You name it, they've got it! While you're there, grab some live bait with a wide selection of night crawlers, leeches, and minnows. Fully stocked with liquor, beer, and snacks; just grab ice for your cooler and you're ready for a day on Houghton Lake. Besides the fishing store, Lyman's also has rental cabins on the lake and an ice fishing-themed escape room. Make sure to ask about the Lyman's Junior Angler Club membership, where kids can earn a lure of the month.
Make sure to reference all Michigan ORV laws and purchase an ORV license sticker ($26.25) and ORV trail permit ($10) when operating on ORV trails on state land. Purchase them at Spicer’s and check out the massive show room with boats, atv’s, and snowmobiles. Plus grab some free popcorn.
