The island of Saint Croix is a decent size at 28 miles long and 7 miles wide, so transportation is important when planning your activities. The two means of transportation on the island are rental cars or taxis, there is no uber or metro bus transportation. I recommend renting a vehicle from Rentalcars.com ahead of time so you have freedom to explore the whole island. The optimal time for viewing is around new moons when there will be no moonlight reflecting on the water. The trip is available for all skill levels. $50
Bush Tribe Echo Adventures If the moon doesn’t align for the Bio Bay Kayak Trip, try the 3 hour morning kayak tour. Highly impressed by the knowledgeable guide, he shared information about the island’s ecosystem and history throughout the tour. Enjoy seeing a variety of sea life and wildlife from the safety of your kayak. Jellyfish, snowy egrets, iguanas and sea turtles were just some of animals we saw. We also stopped at a private beach, which we were allowed to explore and beachcomb.
Horseback Riding on the Beach
This is your chance to ride horseback on the beach, including swim and splash right into the Caribbean Sea astride your horse. You’ll feel like you’re part of a movie scene! Reserve your spot here at Equus Ride horseback riding tours.
Guides will assist you as you ride along sandy beaches, open pastures and through a rainforest trail. The best part is splashing through the ocean on these magnificent animals for an unforgettable experience. A bonus of the trip is that you will also learn unique history and ecology of the island.

Turtle Beach is one of the most pristine beaches with the softest white sand located on Buck Island. This uninhabited island is located right off the shores of St Croix. To get there you can kayak or take a boat. We took a day trip out to this beautiful beach aboard a catamaran. Another option is to rent a charter boat that will cater to your own unique desires, book a private charter boat here.
Snorkel / Scuba Dive at Buck Island
One of the most memorable experiences on the island is snorkeling or scuba diving at the Buck Island Reef National Monument. This breath-taking underwater trail winds along the coral reef where you will view thousands of colorful fish, sea urchins, and turtles. A delightful range of glorious colors fill the seas. This was the highlight of our entire trip! We had the incredible opportunity to swim besides graceful sting rays, green sea turtles and even a lemon shark. (Thankfully, we were a safe distance away from the shark) This glorious experience is in warm tropical 80 degree waters- pure perfection!

Hike to the Tide Pools
Couples who enjoy a challenge will love this adventurous hike to Annaly Bay Carambola Tide Pools. This 5 mile, out and back hike, will take you through rainforest trails and stunning overlooks of Carambola Beach Resort and Davis Bay. The narrow jungle trail has uneven terrain and exposed roots so it feels like you’re in a different world. The most thrilling part is near the end of the hike, you have to precariously hug the ledge while you step across to reach the opposite side. It’s 2.5 mile hike (one way) to the tide pools, but worth it for the breathtaking views. The beach area is rocky so use extra caution when swimming. Tip Definitely start out in the morning to ensure enough time.

One of the best beaches on the island, with a beautiful sandy bottom is Sandy Point. This beach is part of the National Wildlife refuge and is a turtle nesting area. In winter it is only open on weekends due to turtle nesting. It’s a decent walk through sand to get to the shore, note there are no restroom facilities so plan accordingly.
Shoy’s Beach
If you prefer a beautiful quiet beach with plenty of shade and no crowds, then head to Shoy’s Beach. It’s a short walk from the parking lot. The water drops off at about 10 feet from the shoreline. Great beach for sea combing and for snorkeling. There is good visibility ,plus along the left side of the beach is a reef where you can see a variety of colorful fish. Watch out for the black urchins and coral in the water.
Frederiksted Beach Pier Located near Frederiksted’s downtown, we made a whole day of it by visiting the beach after exploring the historic town, grabbed lunch and headed to the charming shops. Polly’s on the Pier is a great little place to grab breakfast or lunch. The old pier columns are an ideal place to snorkel to see seahorses. We appreciated having our own US Dive snorkeling gear and bag, which was easy to bring with us while exploring new beaches and it was much cheaper than renting.
Shopping in St. Croix
Surprise your significant other with a beautiful handmade artisanal item or piece of jewelry at one of the boutiques in the historic shopping area found in Frederiksted and Christiansted. With no sales tax and duty free items, it’s a convenient time to shop. Saint Croix is specifically known for its hook bracelet, which is a popular Crucian jewelry design, or you can bargain shop for discount liquor or locally made rums. Cruzan Rum and Captain Morgan are both distilled locally and you can tour the facilities. Shopping in the quaint shops, built in 1700-1800’s is a real treat. Plus, transactions are easy since the US dollar is their currency. Most shops are open 9-5 Mon- Sat., closed on Sundays.
Packing List
Here are a few essentials we highly recommend bringing on your Saint Croix vacation.
Non-mineral based sunscreens are banned in the USVI. The chemicals in many sunscreens can be harmful to the coral reef system. Be prepared by purchasing mineral based sunscreens prior to getting to the island, since prices are much heftier in St. Croix. Reef Safe Sunscreen is a great option.
Snorkel Gear
You can rent snorkel gear, but having your own is definitely advantages. Personally we benefited from bringing our own US Divers Snorkel Gear with bag.
Under Water Camera
I highly suggest bringing an underwater camera. Disappointed with so many missed once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities, like swimming by a lemon shark, sea turtles and sting rays, we immediately purchased the Proshot Underwater Camera case upon returning from our trip which turns your phone into your own underwater camera. We have used it multiple times since then and love it.
