It’s a perfect stop for a fun day trip while visiting Ohio Amish Country. There is so much to do in this area, we spent three days hiking, dining, shopping, visiting museums, local wineries and theater plays, check out our Guide to a Weekend Getaway to Ohio Amish Country.

An ideal place to visit with rich history, Mohican State Park features suspension bridges, waterfalls, hiking trails and abundant wildlife! Spend a day exploring the trail system. Mohican State Park sees a lot of foot traffic and trails can be quite busy, especially during the weekends.

Mohican State Park has three main trails that are heavily used by visitors looking to escape in nature, which is great, but also places a large strain in one area. Thankfully to combat the amount of foot traffic, rangers began to plan and renovate a trail that had been closed since 1930. To alleviate so much traffic an abandoned trail from the 1930’s Civilian Conservation Corp was reopened. After extensive work, now the Gorge Overlook Trail can be enjoyed by park visitors today.

The Gorge Overlook Trail At a Glance

Distance 2 miles

Difficulty Level Rated difficult due to steep elevation, the swinging bridge and ladder climb

Dogs are allowed, although the ladder climb would make it a bit challenging

Children I would feel comfortable taking children, but only if I trusted their ability to follow directions because there are steep drop offs on the trail.

Entrance Fee: None, Ohio continues to be one of the few states in the United States that doesn’t charge admission or a parking fee for its state parks. Day use areas, hiking trails, and beaches have no fees for use, which makes it a budget-friendly family adventure.

Parking/ Trailhead Access can be gained from Mohican’s iconic landmark, the Clear Fork Gorge. Park in the first parking lot near the entrance. Follow the signs for the Gorge Overlook Trail.

TIP We recommend descending into the gorge from the first overlook (West side of the gorge). Hike left to right. This way you climb up the ladder, instead of having to descend backwards down the ladder.

History: The task of rebuilding the park was given to the Civilian Conservation Corps in efforts to help restore the land to a rich thriving woodland after harsh farming practices desecrated the land. In 2020, the newly revitalized trail was opened.

What To Wear

TIP Wear footwear with plenty of tread to navigate the rocky, steep terrain. The key to an enjoyable hike is to be prepared with the right clothing, hiking shoes and gear. Thankfully I was adequately dressed with the new hiking shoes for women by adidas.

I highly recommend the TERREX SPEED ULTRA TRAIL RUNNING SHOES by adidas. I’m obsessed with the bright colors, the incredible traction they provide and the lightweight feel. Whether it’s a day hike or a local run, these shoes will go the distance.

Another favorite clothing item for the trail is the TERREX MULTI LEGGINGS, which have all the key components for a great legging. They feature a high waist and stretchy fabric that moves with you. Plus, they have a pocket to safely stash your phone or keys so you can hike in comfort and focus on the trail ahead. What To Expect

The Gorge Overlook Trail at Mohican State Park is a thrilling hike that allows you to delve into the history of the area, as well as, enjoy the beautiful views within this Ohio State Park. On a recent trip, my husband and I set out to hike the Gorge Overlook Trail. The trail is rated difficult and just as the sign clearly states, be prepared for a strenuous hike with steep drop offs.

As you’re hiking, you’ll glimpse old remains from the foundation of shelters from CCC. The trail descends along the south bank of Clear Fork and leads alongside the rivers banks, where you can absorb the tranquil sounds of the river flowing and view wildlife. Throughout your hike you will be surrounded by towering trees and interesting rock formations.

Eventually, you’ll come upon the swinging cable bridge. Stretching across the Mohican River, the bridge swings freely while anchored by steel cables. Make sure to stop midway and take in the beautiful views of Clear Fork below. The swinging cable bridge is one of the highlights of the trail and kids will especially love this section.

TIP The bridge is a great spot for a photo.

Once across the bridge, the trail begins the strenuous climb up the gorge. Yes, this task might feel a bit daunting but there are stairs to help navigate the uphill slope and terrain with switchbacks helping reduce the incline. These stairs are the original stairs constructed from the CCC in the 30s. In due time these will lead you to the next obstacle to conquer, the ladder. Once you scale the ladder, the trail continues to ascend upward. Luckily, there are benches to rest. So make sure to sit a spell in nature after you’ve completed this exhilarating hike.
